Book one: The Misfortunate One
  • “I’m Prince Avery Sparkfreed, I am sorry for being harsh with you. We’ve had a lot of angels try and come through here to destroy us as of late always asking for father to kill him. If he goes, we all go.”
  • “Really how does that work?”
  • “I am the last Lord of this place, I control what goes on. If I don’t pass the crown onto Avery-my eldest son before my death then this place and all in it will collapse and die out. We have no other place to call home.” The elder male stated
  • She was in thought for a while as she tried to keep pace with the two males in the meantime. While they walked Reyna could hear a ringing sound in her ears which made her cover her ears only to see that Avery had done the same. The elder male motioned for Avery to take Reyna somewhere safe and he nodded his head. He grabbed Reyna by the arm before pulling her away flying off. Reyna was rather confused but went with it as Avery took her to a rather large building that was the same color as the sand on the ground. The room he took her to was just as dark as the rest of the palace.
  • “We should be safe here, this is my room by the way.” Avery stated as he let go of the young woman’s arm
  • Reyna let go of her ears and she could barely hear the ringing anymore. “What’s happening out there Avery, I’m confused.”
  • “Angels, they found a way into this realm, we have a security system that helps us keep them at bay since the angels have hated the fact that my father had fallen in love with one of their kind and ‘exploited’ them. Which is nonsense, my mother loved my father and they just couldn’t understand the fact that they loved one another. It’s because of the ignorance of the angels that I lost my mother due to a curse my grandfather on my mothers side did to not only her but any angel that was held captive within this place.” Avery explained
  • “You mean a curse?” Reyna asked
  • Avery nodded his head, “It’s cause of that curse that I lost my first lover. I can’t even get her back. All angel’s that die here don’t ever come back.”Avery said sadly as he had picked up a picture of him with a blond haired female and dark blue eyes, they looked rather happy together in the picture.
  • Reyna frowned as she looked at him. “Sorry to hear that, but back to the curse. An angel casted it?”
  • “Yeah...what’s so odd about that?” Avery asked as he set the picture down and looked at her once more
  • “Curses are only casted by demon kind and only as a last resort cause it can drain life force from the person who casts the curse.” Reyna explained. “If an angel did so, they must have gotten their hands on curses and hex’s book that was part of the founder's clan. If that’s the case then it can be reversed just I need to go to my uncles about it and I don’t even know where to even start with that.”
  • “I see...So tell me something princess, how do you know my father so well? He didn’t seem to question you at all earlier.” Avery asked skeptically as he raised an eyebrow at the young red haired female before him.
  • “Lord Lou and my father have a good bond with one another-on many occasions I would train with Lord Lou to see my progress since I didn’t live with my father-I lived with the acid dragons that he was pacted to instead. Lord Lou said that once I accomplished defeating my elder sister and taking her place by my father that he will allow me into the chaos realm and that is where I will get the mark to form my own contract with the wraiths as my father had.” Reyna explained as she walked around the room before she stood with her back towards him with her hands behind her together.
  • Avery sat on his bed and sighed out with his arms crossed. “I don’t doubt that it has happened, I have seen my father leave a lot after my mother’s death. No doubt it was to help you out, so that checks out. But why would father have a lot of faith in you instead of one of the others. Why are you so special?” Avery asked as he looked at her skeptically.
  • “I'm not special Avery, I'm nothing more than a mix of two races that was raised as just one as I defy the other. Your father no doubt sees me as a way to turn the tides on the angels.” Reyna spoke with a shrug"No doubt cause I hate the angel's for my own reason he'd take advantage of it and use it for his own gain."
  • They both then heard the loud ringing again and Reyna held onto her ears once more as she knelt down in pain due to her ears being twice as sensitive being not only part angel but part demon as well. At that time one of Avery’s younger brothers came into his room. “Brother, they're attacking the castle! Where’s father?!” The male asked in a panic
  • “Miles from here dealing with a different group of angels. Get the others and go to the safe place Riki. I’ll take care of the angels here. Princess go with him.” Avery said as he got up first looking at his brother before looking at Reyna who didn’t look amused, his brothers left rather quickly after hearing Avery speak, before Reyna spoke up.
  • “You aren’t treating me like a child! I am a warrior so let me fight!” Reyna said sternly as she had her hands balled up on either side of her as she glared at the elder raven haired male.
  • Avery sighed. “You aren’t going to have much power here Princess.”
  • “Watch me!” Reyna hissed out coldly before she left out quickly
  • “God damn it!” Avery said before he rushed after her. “Princess, wait for me! I don't want anything bad to happen to you!”
  • Reyna managed to get outside and fly up to the highest peak on the castle before she noticed all of the angels had a pink like glint on their wings. She knew that they followed her mother and knew that she could be merciful with them. She slit her palm with the dagger before she placed it against the amour around her chest as she chanted in a demonic-like language. All of the angel’s saw her and went straight for her instead of the castle. As they got closer there was a dark blood red circle force field around her body that whenever an angel got close to it they got turned to dust.
  • When she released the spell the rest of the angel’s turned to dust screaming out in pain and agony as there was a large wave of power that came off of Reyna as she stayed calm being at the top of the castle. By that time Avery had finally caught up with her and panted out as he looked at her shocked. “How the...what did you do?!” Avery asked shocked
  • “It’s called an impurity spell. Those that are seen as impure to the person who cast it are demolished into ashes.” Reyna said calmly “Never doubt me Prince Avery,I realize that you’ve been sheltered here to think certain things-but they do not apply to me. I am strong enough to take care of myself. It’s what I’ve been trained to do all of my life. I was cared for and raised to be a weapon for my father and yours, I am not my father’s daughter-I am his weapon. I am his last resort against my mother if all else fails.”
  • Avery’s purple eyes widened as he realized that her life wasn’t her own, Reyna's life had been chosen from her the moment she had been born unlike him. He had the choice of learning how to fight or not. Which he hadn’t-he didn’t think he had to, to that day he had no idea how to fight. Unlike the woman he saw before him-calm, collected as she stared at him without a hint of emotion going through them.
  • It didn’t take long for Lou to come up to them and pat Reyna on the back a few times. “Good work, I knew you wouldn’t let me down Princess.”
  • She stared at the elder male and gave a fake half smile. “Thank you sir, now may we proceed?”
  • “Of course-Of course, I do apologize for that. Your mother isn’t all that keen on the fact that your father has plans to make you be a full demon.”
  • Reyna scoffed as she crossed her arms. “If that woman wished for me to take part in my angelic side then she should have taken care of me and not done what she had to my father. I care and love my father with all of my heart-it’s because of him that I am able to live the life that I cherish so much.”
  • “Let’s get going, there is much for you to do princess.” Lou stated as he motioned for her to follow him.
  • She nodded her head as she followed after him with Avery not far behind her. Avery couldn’t help but find the young woman alluring-as if something pulled him to her, but he had no idea what it was and that confused him dearly.
  • When they reached a rather large dark silver door Avery backed away a bit. “Father you're not seriously placing her through that are you?! I barely passed that!”
  • “Reyna is different from you, she trained for battle. You chose not to have the power she needs. She must go through this as her father had done before her.” Lou stated seriously “Did you wish to accompany her?”
  • Avery furrowed his eyebrows a bit before he sighed out. “I can’t allow a lady to do something so dangerous alone...I’ll go with her...Just this is insane. She shouldn’t have to do this.”
  • “Yes she does, maybe this time you’ll actually learn a thing or two about being a true wraith, the only downside to your mother brainwashing you was that you never got to experience what it’s truly like to be a wraith. Your powers are still very much locked up.” Lou said with a sigh
  • “I’m ready to go whenever sir.” Reyna said sternly
  • “Very well, take as much time as you need and you must come out of it alive and well. I will know if either of you end up becoming ill or near death.” Lou stated
  • She nodded her head before she looked at Avery. “Shall we?”
  • Avery walked up to her and sighed. “Yeah...I guess. At least I’m doing it this time with someone. I never liked this trail alone.”
  • Reyna didn’t understand why Avery resented the trial but as the doors opened on either side she stepped in with Avery as it began to be dark once more. “Well this sucks, how the * are we supposed to see?”
  • “That’s part of my problem, I was feeling around for * and couldn’t find anything.” Avery said with a sigh
  • “Hold up here. I got us covered.” Reyna said before she casted a spell where four small yellow and orange orbs circled between the two of them making it easier for them to see all that was around them. “There we go.”
  • Avery sighed in relief. “You know a lot of magic.” He commented as the walked
  • “I do, because the dragons I lived with taught me. The acid breathing dragons are half human half dragon. They shift between the two whenever they want and when they turned into their human-like forms I was taught different types of magic from all of them. It’s rather surprising that you don’t know at least some type of magic Avery. Just what do you do with your spare time?” Reyna asked curiously
  • “Honestly? I watch my siblings. I have a * ton of siblings.” Avery complained looking down at her before they stopped when they reached a gap in the ground.
  • Reyna got her wings out. “Can you glide over or do I have to carry your wimpy butt?”
  • “I can fly, I can’t look down or I might end up losing myself into the pit.”
  • Reyna held onto his hand tightly. “You won’t fall, we came here together so we’re going to get out of here together.”
  • Avery blinked his eyes a few times before he nodded his head. “Okay...let’s go princess.”
  • They flew over and instantly as they landed they met up with goblins that rushed at them. Reyna cast a circle of fire around the goblins as she looked to Avery who backed away to the side of the area.
  • “Oh for the love! Are you going to be that much of a coward?! You’re a wraith! Do you know what your kind is known for doing?”
  • Avery shook his head. “N-No…”
  • “Draining life, think of the most horrible memory you have and use that to bring out your inner wraith.” Reyna stated as she moved back a bit as the small globes were only around Reyna.
  • Avery shut his eyes as he remembered how his last girlfriend turned to ash in front of him after he gave her one last kiss, the area around him clouded up into a dark purple smoke before his body changed form, he grew out four different arms on either side of him as his face and body were enlarged three times what it normally would have been. Avery grabbed each one of the goblins in his hands as he drained them with the skin contact. Once they were gone she went in front of him by flying up to him face to face.
  • She then placed her hands on either side of his face. “Good job, now calm down...it’s okay ...you're okay Avery.” She said softly
  • Avery didn’t listen to her, instead she was flung into a wall face first making her whine out. He then left out without her. She didn’t take it personally, she merely followed behind him to see what he’d do only to see that he destroyed everything and anything in his path. Making things fly towards her, after the third thing she knew he was doing it on purpose so she stayed out of the way and let him go on his rampage until he couldn’t keep the transformation up anymore.
  • By that time Reyna had managed to fall asleep hiding behind some rubble to keep herself from being harmed. As it was she had cuts on her from hitting the wall that had spikes on them and bruises on her from projectiles being flung at her. When Avery realized that he had separated from Reyna he slightly freaked out as he realized that he might have accidentally killed the young princess. He cursed under his breath and rushed back through all of the rubble as he went searching for the princess. When he saw her she was very beat up, bloody and unconscious, which made him feel rather guilty knowing damn well that it was because of him that she ended up in the state she was in.
  • The glowing orbs were rather dim which was how he was even able to find her to begin with. He picked her up and placed the orbs on her as he carried her out. He repeatedly apologized to her even if she couldn’t hear him. He wasn’t a fighter and he didn’t even know that he could do so much damage if provoked to do so. He took her to a tent that was set up for those who took the trial and he bandaged her body up. As he did, he stopped when he saw a starflower mark familiar to his own on her hip, he pressed his thumb against the mark only to hear a slight moan come out of the younger woman.
  • He raised an eyebrow at her as he did it again only to hear the moan again. “Princess?” He asked confused
  • He didn’t get anything so he leaned over and kissed the mark softly only to get it to burn her skin. Her wings instinctively went out as she moaned out once more, hearing the moans made him curious about the markings that they had. Avery shook his head before he finished patching her up, he then covered her leaving her to sleep as he took watch. As he did he ended up falling asleep sitting up, that was until he felt a pair of arms around his neck. He opened his eyes sleepily as he looked behind him to see Reyna.
  • “You actually came back to your senses...I’m glad.” She said happily
  • “Sorry about that, I don’t know how to control it.” Avery said sadly. “I hurt you a lot, how are you not mad at me Princess?”
  • “Forgive and forget, now let’s go yeah? There’s more to this isn’t there?”
  • “Yeah. This is just the beginning of it.” Avery said with a nod of his head.
  • “That’s what I thought.” She said with a nod of her head as she got up
  • She then went in front of him and held her hand out to him. “Let’s go Avery.” She said happily
  • He took her hand and she pulled him up before they walked together side by side even though Avery felt uneasy being beside her. After seeing the mark on her hip he was unsure if who he loved was the right person to love to begin with. Reyna saw that he was spacing out a lot and looked at him rather concerned.
  • “Avery you alright? You look a bit out of it.” Reyna asked concerned
  • “Hm? Oh...the mark you have on your left hip...how long has that been there?” Avery asked
  • “Are you talking about the evil mark I have on me? My father tells me that it’s a mark to help me find who I belong to...why do you ask?” Reyna asked
  • “Why do you call it evil?”
  • “Cause from what I was told, the moment my mate touches it, I’ll go into a fever like heat until both my mate and I are satisfied...why ask?” She repeated
  • Avery stopped walking and Reyna saw this and stopped walking as well. “Avery?” She asked curiously
  • Avery shut his eyes and sighed out. “I honestly thought that the Angel I had fallen in love with was my soulmate-she was everything ever wanted in a woman...but I know now why things happened how they had. Princess…” He said before he opened his eyes and lifted his shirt up.
  • On the right side of his hip was the same exact marking she had on her hip on his. She stepped back a few steps as she looked at him.
  • “We can’t seriously be…”
  • “We are, I’m asking because when I was taking care of your wounds I had touched that mark on you...and you moaned. It affected me and I didn’t know why-I was never told about markings and what they could do to a person. But hearing you speak about them, it’s obvious that things aren’t as they seem between us.”
  • Reyna averted her eyes. “I’m only fourteen though...I’m nowhere near ready to be close to anyone.”
  • “I feel the same and I’m only an age older than you.”
  • “Seriously?”
  • “Yeah seriously, what don’t believe me?”
  • She shook her head no. “No I believe you just...I didn’t think you’d be the person I’d be stuck with. We’re very different from one another.”
  • “Agreed, we are different but I think in time we will be able to accept one another.”
  • “Yeah...I guess you’re right on that. Let’s just get going, the sooner we get out of here the sooner we can finally do something about the marks on us.”
  • He nodded his head as they walked with a gap between them, he hated that there was a gap between them-but there wasn’t much he could do. Reyna wouldn’t get close to him no matter what happened. For the rest of the trial she stayed as far as she could from him and took care of things on her own, that was until they got to the end where there were three angels waiting for them. One of them had Avery’s father tied up and gagged as he looked rather beaten up. Avery looked scared seeing his father in such a state.
  • By that time Reyna was running on fumes so she couldn’t do what she wanted as much as she wanted to do so. One of the angels went up to her and cupped her face. “So you’re my daughter huh? Zavier told me that he placed you here in Lou’s care. I didn’t expect to see you with his spineless son.”
  • Reyna narrowed her green eyes at the blond female in front of him. “You’re supposed to be my mother?”
  • Emilia chuckled and smiled. “Yes, Yes I am daughter.”
  • “You’re ugly as heck, no wonder you had to resort to raping my beloved father.” Reyna said disgusted
  • Emilia was stunned to hear the words come out of her daughter's mouth. “I did not rape that man! He messed with my mind! He made me think he was my departed husband!” Emilia screeched out angered before she slapped Reyna hard on the face
  • Reyna didn’t flinch or show that it hurt her, she just smirked. “What does knowing that your daughter knows the truth hurt? You tossed me off to the side and wanted to kill me. An innocent child. Tch, and you call yourself a ‘holy angel’, ‘holy angel’ my butt! You’re just as bad as the name you give demons. If anyone is evil here it’s you!”
  • “What the * do you know you pathetic, worthless brat!”
  • “Stop degrading her! She is nothing like you say!” Avery said, standing up tall glaring at the elder angel.
  • “Aww are you finally growing a backbone?” Emilia asked in a baby voice. “My niece would still be around if it hadn’t been for your father *ing with her! He tainted her, now all of you wraiths must go!”
  • “No! You self righteous right winged angels must go! I’m so sick and tired of all of you coming in here like you own my father's domain trying to kill him and my family!” Avery said *ed before he transformed back into his wraith form once more.
  • “Avery, wait! You can’t control yourself just yet!” Reyna said in shock as she looked at the elder male.
  • “I’ll be fine Reyna, just keep out of my way and you’ll be fine.” Avery said before he completely transformed.
  • Reyna pushed her mother out of the way to get to the wraith lord, getting him out of the way before she cut the elder males bounds before he had taken the gag off of his mouth “My Lord, how can your son control himself? This is the second time he’s done that and lost control.”
  • Lou looked to Reyna as he could see the concerned look she had on her face, it was the same face that Esta-his wife had once made when he would turn to his form at first.
  • “He will learn in time to control it, just as I have. But you’ve earned your marking child. Stay still.” Lou said before he placed his hand on the left arm of the young demoness female.
  • She showed no emotion as she was branded with the dark lily mark on her arm. “Sir, why is it a lily?”
  • “It’s the symbol of both the wraiths and demons, I would advise you to rest before you go back home.”
  • She nodded her head as she looked outside of the tunnel only to see that the angel’s were all fighting off Avery. “I can’t stand seeing him being outnumbered like that.”
  • Lou raised an eyebrow at her. “Have you grown feelings for my son over the two years you’ve been gone?”
  • She sighed but nodded her head. “Yes...even though I don’t want to admit to it. I have grown accustomed to your son and his odd ways. Though the one thing that is the undeniable truth is that he and I are marked to be together.”
  • Lou kept his eyebrow raised. “Really now?”
  • She lifted her shirt slightly. “Really.” She said showing the starflower marking she had on her left hip.
  • Seeing the marking he knew that Reyna wasn’t bull *ting him. He sighed out and got up. “Go to him, help him out. He’ll learn to deal with the fact that you are a woman with strength that he’ll need as a lord of Chaos.” Lou said as he held his hand out to the younger female.
  • She smiled and nodded her head as she placed her hand in Lou’s hand. He helped her out before she flew out and helped Avery out. She saw where her mother and the angel’s came from so she cast a wind spell that blew them towards the portal before it closed. Avery then went to attack her only for her to hold onto his arm and look him dead in the eyes.
  • “Avery Sparkfreed, stop this nonsense now!” She hissed out coldly, her dark green eyes turning a black almost silver color for a moment before turning back to their natural dark green once more.
  • Avery soon snapped out of it and he turned back to his normal state, as he did Reyna kept a hold onto his hand before she hugged him tightly-burying her head against his chest. “Don’t be that stupid ever again.”
  • “P-Princess?” Avery said shocked as he looked down at Reyna.
  • Lou chuckled at the expression on his eldest son's face. “Looks like the princess has accepted you son. Take that as a good sign to a good treaty between the two of you later on. Take her home and both of you rest well. I will be with the two of you very soon.”
  • Y...Yes father.” Avery said with a nod of his head before he left out with Reyna who wouldn’t let him go.
  • It wasn’t until he teased her about bathing together, that she let go of him and let him be alone for a short period of time. After they both bathed, they slept beside one another in his rather large bed as he instinctively held onto her tightly as she was okay with it as she koala hugged the elder male not wanting to let him go. The next day after eating Reyna said her goodbye to Lord Lou before she was escorted back to the way she came from by Avery. Once they got close to the exit Avery stopped her from leaving too quickly. He cupped her face and kissed her on the lips softly-but passionately.
